CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Relief coursed through Elsie, even if it shouldn’t. How was she going to explain this to her sisters? That she’d stayed with them a few days then up and disappeared—leaving a majority of her equipment behind.

But no matter how guilty she felt over that, she got to stay. She got to continue to be part of this. If they’d shipped her back to Revival, she’d always be a step behind, doling out information as she found it, not as it happened in front of her. It was for the best that she stay here.

For the best.

And had absolutely everything to do with wanting to be close to Nate, to continue to work with him on this. Together. She understood that, even as she told herself it was stupid and way beyond the point. She couldn’t help it. They’d become...a team in these short few days.

She needed to see this through with him.

Mallory entered the small cabin, so that it was now chock-full of people with not a lot of space to breathe. But no one acted like that was weird or uncomfortable as Mallory explained she’d gotten Don situated with Garrett and some new security and North Star communications.

But then Mallory’s gaze turned to Elsie with some apology in her expression. “Uh, Els. Your sister was in the police station when I left.”

Since those words didn’t make sense together, Elsie could only manage one word. “What?”

“Yelling at Garrett. Demanding to know what Nate had done with you.”

“Oh. Dear,” Elsie managed. She didn’t look at Nate. She didn’t look at anything except her computer.

“Garrett was handling it okay, but I’m pretty sure anyone in a ten-mile radius is going to know Els and Nate are connected, and if more people are out there looking at Nate...”

“Yeah, we know,” Shay said on a sigh. “We’ve already decided to keep Elsie here. But someone is going to have to shut the sister up.”

“I’ll call her,” Elsie said, dread filling her as she forced herself to sound firm and in control. “I’ll get her to stop looking for me and making demands. But if the wrong person did hear her... Shay, you have to make sure no one hurts Revival.”

“Like we aren’t spread thin enough. I’ll call in—”

“Shay. I need you to make sure no one hurts Revival. Not part-timers or friends you call in for a favor. This is my family, who don’t even connect to what’s happening. I need someone I trust. Someone I know will—”

“What about Granger?”

Elsie stopped on a dime. Granger Macmillan had been the first leader of North Star. When he’d been injured, Shay had taken over. Granger had gone off to some mysterious ranch deep in the mountains and, for a while, only Shay had known where he was. It was just in the past few months that Shay had been getting him to come back and help with missions—though he wouldn’t return to the group officially no matter how they tried to convince him.

Still, Elsie trusted Granger just as much as Shay and the rest of the full-time North Star team.
